Expert Interview

Slingshot members are talking to an expert! The topic is:

A Second Look: Discussing data centers and water use, focusing on Xylem, American Water Works, Vertiv

Ticker(s): VRT, AWK, XYL

Who's the expert?

I've actually consulted for data center operators before, including helping secure water rights from utilities in texas. That work was confidential but I can speak to the specific needs, challenges faced, and resolutions. At a high level there is a critical need for data centers to have a reliable water supply, not just now but as they expand in the future. So while a phase 1 may required 5 million gallons a day, future phases may require up to 20 million gallons a day. The largest opportunities to reduce water use is more innovative on-site treatment and reuse, then more efficient equipment. However, they are already pretty efficient already. The water supplies can be secured from local government as they like the jobs and development in the area. The issue is the overall volume required is often more than the utility can legally commit to. This varies by states as river/water rights vary by state. The firms are typically the top 10/20 architectural and engineering firms as ranked by ENR Engineering News Records. The companies supplying specialty equipment is xylem, violea, evoqua, suez, and a few others.
