- Dr Abani R Samal holds PhD from SIU Carbondale, a DIC & MS from Imperial College, London, and an M Tech (Mineral Exploration) degree from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, India. He has been practicing mining geology and deposit evaluation since 1996. Currently, he is the principal and owner of GeoGlobal, LLC, and provides technical and strategic advisory services to exploration and mining companies, government agencies, and major financial institutions worldwide. Evaluating mineral deposits at the best possible accuracy levels and improving productivity by making certain improvements in the value chain are his technical strengths. He has vast experience in various commodities including heavy mineral sands, uranium, precious metals, base metals, and iron ore occurring in various parts of the world.
- Dr Samal has led or contributed to the economic assessment of several major mineral deposits which include Onca-Puma lateritic nickel deposit (Brazil), Oyu Tolgoi copper deposit (Mongolia), southern system iron ore deposits (Brazil), Iron Ore Canada (IOC), Morenci copper mine, Lone-Tree gold mine, Bingham Canyon copper mine, Rossing Uranium operation, Resolution copper project, and Diavik diamond mine.
- He has been an empaneled expert for the World Bank and providing services to the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification Project (MinDiver) in Nigeria since 2017. As a lead technical advisor in this assignment, he has led efforts for the development of mineral resources in Nigeria through the National Steel Raw Material Agency (NSRMEA). His involvement has led to the development of an integrated geosciences database on iron-ore prospects through green and brownfield exploration projects. These projects would catalyze direct investment into the Nigerian iron and steel industry. Dr Samal transfers knowledge and shares experiences through professional development programs to industry professionals and researchers. Major professional societies including SME, AIG, CIM, IUGS, and MEAI have hosted his professional development programs.
- Abani R Samal is a Registered Member of SME and a leading member of many other international professional societies including GSA, SEG, CIM, and IAMG. Dr Samal is an active contributing member of the Resource and Reserve Committee of SME.
- He serves on the editorial boards of two international journals: Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Journal (MMEX) and Natural Resources Research Journal.
- He has been recognized several times for his excellence in the areas of his practice and leadership in the industry
